Around 12:30 pm, Sunday afternoon, Companies 20 and 74 (Primos-Secane), RIT 37 (Upper Darby), and Medic 103-7B (DCMH Paramedics) were dispatched to 4126 Vernon Rd. for a house fire, reported to be in the basement. Moments later, Chief 20-9 (Hoban) and Engine 20-1, under the command of D/C 20-9A (M. Morgan), arrived to find a 2 1/2 story twin dwelling with heavy smoke showing. The crew from 20-1 then stretched an 1 3/4" attack line through the front door and began searching for the fire. Engine 20-2 arrived next and dropped a 3 1/2" supply line from 20-1. The crew of 20-2 then stretched a backup 1 3/4" line off of 20-1. As the crew of 20-1 was advancing through the first floor, heavy fire began blowing out of the rear of the house from the basement door. The flames were so intense that the fire quickly extended above the roof line from the basement. 20-2's crew then stretched their line to the rear and began an aggressive attack on the seat of the fire, as Ladder 20 arrived in the rear and its crew assisted. Tower 74 took the rear right behind Ladder 20 and began ventilation efforts and throwing ground ladders. Rescue 58 (Bon Air) was also requested for the air bank, and upon arrival Rescue 58 and Rescue 20's crews began checking for extension in the adjoining home. Crews found heavy smoke throughout the home with negative fire extension and began ventilating. Interior crews were able to stop the fast-moving fire in the main fire building in a matter of minutes, but not before heavy fire extended to the first floor kitchen and dining room areas. Crews then undertook the long task of extensive salvage and overhaul. Crews continued hitting hot spots for several more minutes before the fire was placed under control. The home also suffered severe smoke and water damage. Company 20 was in service for just over three hours with no injuries reported. First two pictures courtesy of Brian Lynch.
