2 ALARM HOUSE FIRE IN HIGHLAND PARK
Saturday, December 26, 2009
-
On Saturday night, shortly before 8:30 pm, Companies 26 (Highland Park) and 37 (Upper Darby), Engine 36 (Cardington-Stonehurst), RIT 74 (Primos-Secane), and Medic 103-7A (DCMH Paramedics) were dispatched to 127 Woodlawn Ave. for the house fire, reported to be the basement. As units were responding, fireboard advised that police were on location reporting a working basement fire with all occupants out of the residence. Engine 26-1 arrived first to find a 2 1/2 story twin dwelling with heavy smoke showing. The crew from 26-1 stretched an 1 3/4" hoseline into the building to encounter heavy fire in the basement. 26-1's attack crew then attempted to protect the basement stairway while the crew from Squirt 36 arrived and stretched another attack line into the basement from the rear. Upper Darby 11 (D/C Hicks) then arrived and assumed command, immediately striking out a 2nd alarm for heavy fire in the basement. On the 2nd were the balance of Companies 74 and 36, along with Company 20. Ladder 20 and Engines 20-1 & 20-2 responded under the command of D/C 20-9A (M. Morgan) and A/C 20-9B (B. Tully). Upon arrival, the crews assisted in fire suppression, searches, ventilation, and salvage & overhaul. The heavy fire spread to the 1st floor of the dwelling, leading to a partial floor collapse and forcing crews to evacuate for an exterior attack. The stubborn fire was finally brought under control in about 90 minutes and Company 20 was back in the station around 10:30 pm. Thank you to the crews from Engine 09-2 (Sharon Hill) and Tower 44 (Springfield) for covering Drexel Hill during the fire.
